Vaginal Infection Facts
Vaginal discharge can be normal or “physiologic”. The discharge is the gooey or watery fluid that comes out of our vagina without any effort or provocation. It is a normal cleansing of the vagina area and once it has been on our underwear, it can turn into a yellowy or white“snot” color.
Vaginal discharge can also be abnormal and that is the result of a vaginal infection or a foreign object like a retained tampon. Infections of the vagina can be divided into non-sexually transmitted and sexually transmitted infections.
Non-sexually transmitted vaginal infections include the following: foreign objects in the vagina (tissue paper, retained tampon), yeast vaginitis and bacterial vaginosis.
