About STIs
Sexually transmitted vaginal infections(STI) are infections that can only be gotten through sexual contact. These include the following: chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomonas, HPV (human papilloma virus), herpes simplex virus, though the chlamydia does not usually have any symptoms.
Sexually transmitted infections are tested easily by an inspection of the vagina using a speculum plus a simple vaginal swab (smaller than a Q-tip) which is placed briefly inside your vagina/cervix then sent off in a test tube to an outside lab. Results are back within 3 days; 5 days if it is a test for herpes.
If your test shows that you have one or more sexually transmitted infections, then Dr. Jen will be letting you know what that means for you and your current or future partners, will prescribe the appropriate treatment, and also discuss how to do partner notification which is letting your partner or future partner know about this infection.
